r

^ ~

Two other areas where ground water declines are noted include the
Elkhorn Ri""er basin in northeast :;ebraska and the Box Butte County area
in northwest ~~ebraska. Tl-te State of \"ebraska has indicated that the
lowe r E1 kho ["0 R i lie r bas 1n does not cons tit ute an "adjacent d. rea" and is
'lot a potential sel"vice area for the High Plains Study. The State has
also indicated tit-'ll it may not be necesSiHy to serve the Box Butte
County area because recent studies l:1dicate that the aquifer is much
deeper than originally believed. During the later portion of the High
Plains Study, the decision was made that anI I existing irrigation
problem areas would be served. Since no new irrigated areas would be
created. the tableland area between the =-,orth and South Platte River~
would not be served.

The areas to be served in ~ebraskd are shown in figure 6 and the
estin~ted quantities needed are li~ted in table 2N According to infor-
mation from the State of :-;ebraska and the High Plains AssocL3.tes, the
SOuthwestern ~ebraska areas and the Big and Little Blue River basins
have the highest need among the existing irrigated ar~as.

TABLE 2
IRRIGATION WATER ~EEDS
11'0 :-;EBRASKA

No. Service Area

Year 2020
Water Demand
(AFA)

Requ ired
Oependable Yield
at Terminal Storage 1/
(AFA)

1 O'~eill
2 Platte River-~orth
3 Big and Little Blue River basins
4 Perkins-Chase Counties
5 Republican River basin

Total

187.000
186,000
549.000
561,000
300,000
1,783,000

210,000
205,000
610,000
625,OUO
335,000
1,985,000

1/ Includes lO-percent loss betlO'een the reservoirs and the farm.

AU
