1 - "

Two othe~ areas wher~ ground water declines are noted include the
Elkhorn River basl~ 1n northeast ~ebraska and the Box Butte County area
in northwest :.ebraska. T"Je State of Sebraska has indicated that the
lower Elkhorn ~lver basin does not constitute an "adjacent area" and is
not a potential <;erl/ice area for the 1I1gh Pl.dns Study. The State has
also indicated thelt it may not be necessary to serve the Box Butte
County area because recent studies indicate that the aquifer is much
deeper than originally believed. During the later ponion of the IIlgh
Plains Study. the decision was made that onll existing irrigation
problem areas would he served. Since no new irrigated areas would be
created, the tableland area between the ~arth and South Platte Rivers
would not be served.

The areas to be served in ~ebraska are shown in figure 6 and the
estim.Jted quantities needed are listed in table 2. According to infor-
mation from the State of :~ebraska and the High Plains Associates, the
southwestern ~ebraska areas and the Big and Little Blue River basins
have the hizhest need among the existing irrigated areas.

TABLE 2
IRRIGATION WATER ~EEDS
[N :-JEBRASKA

Required
Year 2020 Uependable Yield
[1;0.
