SUMMARY SHEET
Animas-La Plata Project

March 1980
Page 1 oL 3

~

!:Qf.~

.

The Animas-La Plata Project is located in the
Upper CoJorado Basin in La Plata and Hontezuma
Counties of southwestern Colorado and in San
Juan County of northwestern New Mexico.

PURPOSE

The project would serve as a multiple purpose
water resource development. Municipal and
industrial water would be furnished to the
cities of Durango, Colo., and Aztec and Farm-
ington, N. Mex., and to surrounding communi-
ties and for the development of resources on
the Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute Indian
Reservations. The project would also provide
irrigation water primarily for land in the La
Plata River drainage and for some land in the
Mancos River drainage. Opportunities would
be made for recreational development and for
fish and wildlife enhancement at project
reservoi rs.

~

The Animas-La Plata Project was authorized for
construction by the Colorado River Basin Act
of September 30, 1968 (Public Law 90-537) as a
participating project under the Colorado River
Storage Project Act of April 11, 1956 (Public
Law 84-485). The project 1s in the advanced
planning stage.

.

A Draft Definite Plan Report was completed in
September 1979, and the Draft Environmental
Impact Statement and public hearing in mid
calendar year 1979_ The Final Environmental
Statement is to be filed with EPA in early
calendar year 1980. The President's budget
for FY8Q includes $450,000 to continue the
advanced planning.

PLAlI

The main storage feature of the project would
be Ridges Basin Reservoir, located southwest
of the city of Durango. The Durango Pumping
Plant, south of the city, would pump Animas
River Water to Ridges Basin Reservoir. Stored
water would be released as required back to
the Animas River for Aztec, Farmington and
other potential municipal and industrial users
in New Nexico. Durango and ttie surrounding
communities would obtain their additional
municipal and industrial water from Ridges
Basin Reservoir.

Ridges Basin Reservoir would also provide stor-
age for the Ute ~fuuntain Ute Indian Tribe
industrial and irrigation water and for Colo-
rado irrigation water.

.

The Ridges Basin Pumping Plant. located on the
western edge of the reservoir, would pump water
from the reservoir in.to Dry Side Canal, through
Long Hollow Tunnel to the La Plata River Drain-
age. The canal would provide water for the
Colorado Indian and non-Indian project land
and municipal and industrial water for the
Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute Tribes.

Southern Ute Reservoir would store 1.a Plata
River flows and irrip:ation return flows diverted
into the reservoir through the Southern Ute
Diversion Dam and Canal.

Southern' Ute Reservoir would meet the municipal
and industrial water requirements of the South-
ern Ute Indians and the irrigation requirements
of the New Mexico project lands. Should not
enough La Plata River water be available from
the reservoir to meet these requirements, addi-
tional water would come from Ridges Basin Reser-
voir (through Ridges Basin Pumping Plant, Dry
Side Canal and the La Plata River).

Owners of presently irrigated lands immediately
north of the Dry Side Canal. would be given an
opportunity to buy supplemental water from the
La Plata River. This water is presently used
below the proposed canal, but with proje~t sup-
ply available south of the proposed canal, this
water could be used elsewhere. Existing ditches
would distribute the water.

Sprinkler irrigation would be used on all pro-
ject lands except above the Dry Side Canal.
The lateral systems would provide sprinkler
pressure at each farm turnout. Pumping plants
would provide this pressure where the ground
slope is insufficient to pressurize the pipe-
line. Project drainage would also be furnished,
where required, on project land.

Fisheries would be created in the inactive pools
of Ridges Basin and Southern Ute Reservoirs. In
addition, recreational facilities would be pro-
vided at these reservoirs.

@
L!,.

D1JRAN<Xl , ttloa:s
BASl!<l r[/Hrl~C: PlMOTS
lRR1GATio:,-p~Pu.NTS

i1 prvlect Lond,

.
