Releases

from Navajo Reservoir, located in northwestern New Mexico near the Colorado border, will begin

increasing Sunday morning, July 15, at 10 a.m., thus ending the 250 cubic feet per second (cfs) low flow

test. Flows in the San Juan River immediately below the reservoir should be back to 500 cfs by

12 noon Sunday.

Flows had been reduced to 250 cfs for 7 days so Reclamation could collect data to evaluate the

effects low summer flows have on various resources. Reclamation will use the information they

obtained in an environmental impact statement they are preparing on the operations of Navajo Dam and

Reservoir. The 250 cfs flows would be necessary to meet recommendations by the San Juan River Basin

Recovery Implementation Program to benefit downstream endangered fish while protecting authorized

project purposes, and existing and new water development.

The public is encouraged to provide Ed Warner (Bureau of Reclamation, 2764 Compass Drive,
Grand Junction, CO 81506; E-mail ewamerlaluc.usbr.gov) or Ken Beck (Bureau of Reclamation, 835 E.
Second Avenue, Durango, CO 81301; E-mail kbeck@uc.usbr.lwv)withanyinformation they obtained
during the low flow test.

Reclamation will prepare a report summarizing the test and notifY the public when it is
available.

If you have questions or need more information, contact Ed Warner at 970-248-0654, or Ken
Beck at 970-385-6558.

# # #

A
