Meeker Dome. a classic geologic example of the ideal oil
and qas structure, continues to be of interest to oil companies. ~
wells have been drilled in the past two years to test the dome and
adjacent syncline to the east for production in the Pennsylvanian
limestones. Increased precautions are beinq stipulated by the Oil and
Gas Commission. when drill bores penetrate the Weber sandstone. Saline
waur under considerable pressure is encountered and unless adequately
sealed off can become another point source of contamination to fresh
water formations. The Oil and Gas Commission miqht be justified in
denying all future applications for drilling permits until some of the
geoloqic problems can be resolved by test drilling as proposed by the
project exploration proqram.

7. Other qeolO9'ic problelDlS of probable lesser importance
need to be resolved in order tod4termine if other mineral deposits of
economic importance occur in the area and if salt water encroachment
presents a future potential hazard for development of the same.

'co.
c/

CH 110m

Memorandum

-3-

May 17, 1974
