l\)
W PONDS FOR WILDLIFE
~'_4

01 The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
(formally Soil Conservation Service) can assist farmers,
ranchers and developers in designing a pond for
wildlife, irrigation, or livestock water, Ponds can be
designed in all shapes and sizes, Shallow ponds 1-3
feet deep are used by waterfowl, song birds, quail,
deer, as well as other ground dwelling animals, Deep
ponds can be stocked with fish and used as recreation
areas.

For many years farmers and ranchers have been
building ponds for irrigation and livestock water. Many
of these farmers and ranchers recognize that wildlife
also benefit from their ponds, Ponds provide waterfowl
and other wildlife animals areas for breeding, feeding,
watering and a resting place during migration,

Three items should be taken into consideration when
thinking of building a pond: watershed, soil type, and
location, Is the watershed large enough to keep the
pond full or is a pipeline needed to supply the water?
Does the soil have a sufficient amount of clay to hold
water or does it need be lined? Will the pond be
faraway enough from man made structures or will trees
and shrubs need to be planted to, isolate the pond?

Farmers, ranchers or developers thinking about building
a pond are encouraged to contact their local USDA
Natural Resources Conservation Service office at 2754
Compass Drive in Grand Junction or call (303)
242-4511,

Juan Renteria - Civil Engineering Technician
Natural Resources Conservation Service

CALENDAR
Tri-River Ag Expo, Montrose, CO
January 31, February 1 & 2, 1995

Central Plains Irrigation Shortcourse
Garden City, KS, February 7 & 8,

A Reclamation Workshop, Feb, 14 & 15
Grand Junction Holiday Inn

Surge Workshop, LaJunta, CO,
February 22, 1995

Irrigation Water Management Workshop
LaJunta, CO February 23, 1995

Landscapes West, Feb 25 &26
Grand Junction Holiday Inn

RECLAMATION WORKSHOP

What does it take to build a wildlife habitat in your
area?
