SAFETY FOR WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE

Every farm/ranch wife has some hilarious story to tell of
an experience helping her husband on the farm or
ranch, My mother had a long list of "mishaps' that
occurred on the farm while helping my father-most of
which involved trying to stert a stubborn tractor or
truck, My aunt once ran their tractor up on top of their
car after my uncle pulled it around the field to get it
started (he had stopped to open the gate on his way to
the house, and she didn't know how to stop), Another
uncle ran over his wife when she fell off the drawbar
(she was unhurt because of freshly plowed ground),
These stories come up at family gatherings, and we all
laugh about these silly stories, But the truth is. all
could have resulted in serious injuries.

Statistics show that women involved in agricultural
work may be at an increased risk for certain types of
accidents. While men are involved in more tractor
roll overs, women are at a higher risk of being run over
by tractors and other farm machinery,

Most women are as capable as their male counterparts
in working with livestock or running farm equipment,
However, they are somatimes ill prepared to help with a
farm project, Not because they cannot do it, but often
times they are called upon to help while they are busy
doing other things, A quick dash out of the house
without the proper clothing can make a simple job turn
into a disaster.

How many women have work shoes (not tennis shoes),
but shoes that will protect her feet? Or a good pair of
gloves to protect her hands, Most likely, she grabs
whatever is handy and hurries outside to help, We've
all experienced a slick soled shoe on an icy running
board or tractor step, Or grabbing onto some piece of
equipment with our knit gloves,

Dressing for outdoor work takes more time and
thought, Often you only have time to grab your coat
and run, A good pair of shoes that will protect your
feet (especially when working with animalsl and good
fitting leather gloves can prevent a lot of injuries,

Long, loose hair; loose clothing; scarves; and
drawstrings (on sweatshirts and jackets) can become
caught in equipment so easily, If nothing else, push
your hair up under a cap, leave that scarf in the house
and remove the drawstrings from all of your work
clothes, Try to keep things tucked in and out of the
way so that they don't become entangled in a power
take-off or other equipment,

Hitching equipment is another high risk area, Women
should not get caught in a tight 10cetion between a
tractor and other farm machinery, First and foremost,
learn the common hand signals associated with safe
hitching procedures, When hitching, back the tractor
past the hitch and put it in a forward gear, Then inch
forward to align the hitch connection, In this way if a
foot slips off the clutch, the tractor will lurch forward
and not back onto the helper,
