COLORADO RIVER RECOVERY PROGRAM
FY 98 ANNUAL PROJECT REPORT

RECOVERY PROGRAM
PROJECT NUMBER:29umbrella

I. Project title: Propagation Facilities, in the Grand Valley (24 Road Hatchery, and Horsethief
Ponds), for Captive Rearing of Endangered Fishes for the Upper Colorado River Basin.

II. Principal Investigator(s):

Frank K. Pfeifer, Project leader
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
764 Horizon Drive, South Annex A Horizon Drive, South Annex A
Grand Junction, Colorado 81506
(970) 245-9319: Fax 245-6933
E-mail; R6FFA_GRJ@FWS.GOV

Ill.

Project Summary:

J

The Recovery Programs Coordinated Hatchery! Facility Plan outlined the need for additional
propagation facilities to produce Colorado River endangered fish. Several options to meet
this need were explored. Ultimately, the Bureau of Reclamation donated an existing
warehouse at 114924 Road, Grand Junction, Colorado, and remodeled it to accommodate
a hatchery complete with a water reuse system. This facility was created to rear endangered
fish produced from broodstock at Horsethief. The hatchery was completed in April 1996 and
is now in it's third season of operation. The 1996-year-class razorbacks have all been
stocked into the Gunnison or San Juan rivers, or are being held at Horsethief as future
broodstock. The I 997-year-class razorbacks have all been stocked into the Gunnison river,
are being held at 24 Road Hatchery or Horsethief as future broodstock. Razorback suckers
from the 1998-year class are currently being reared at the 24 Road Hatchery.

In May of 1998, razorback broodstock from Horsethief Ponds were spawned and the eggs
were transferred to the 24 Road Hatchery. A total of 14 family lots of fish hatched.
Hatching success varied from 0% to 90%. Over 29,000 fish were hatched from the 1410ts.
In September 1998, 6000 50mm fish, from one 1998 family lot were stocked into Clymer's
Pond for grow-out and eventual stocking.

By September I, 1998, 477 1997 year class razorbacks had been stocked into the Gunnison
River, at Delta Colorado.

As of November I, 1998, over 23,000 razorback suckers (representing 1'8 family lots, four
1997 lots held as broodstock, and 14 1998 lots) are being reared at the 24 Rd. Hatchery.
Some will be kept at the hatchery or at Horsethief for future use as broodstock. After
broodstock requirements are met, fish will be stocked into either the Gunnison or San Juan
rivers in 1999.

)

29u-1.
