.j ':"J. 0
.1. 'OJ 1.~)

.

NORTH STERLING IRRIGATION DISTRICT STUDY AREA

Introduction

.

Early in 1963, a survey was made to determine the potential
market for water from Narrows Reservoir. The results of the
survey, presented in table 14, show that the North Sterling
Irrigation District is the largest single market for project
water. Their request to purchase an estimated 40,900 acre-feet
of water, annually, constitutes about 45 percent of the total
supplemental water requested by ditch company officials. There-
fore, it was concluded that the North Sterling Irrigation District
should serve as the principal study area to determine the basic
economic factors for appraisal of the project area. This Oistrict
is similar in many respects to other ditch systems in the proposed
Narrows Unit service area. Soils, land use, crop production, farm
size, general farming operations, and climatic conditions are
comparable throughout the Lower South Platte Water Conservancy
District which will be the contracting entity for Narrows water.
The North Sterling Irrigation District is also the largest ditch
system in the area. It is large enough to provide basic data for
analyses of economic conditions and farm characteristics. Therefore,
this District was selected for detailed study of representative
farms to determine payment capacity and to evaluate irrigation
benefits in the principal market area.

Table 14.--Requests for supplemental water from the proposed
Narrows Reservoir - 1963 1/

Ditch

Request in
1,000 ac.-ft.

Fort Morgan
North Sterling
Johnson and Edwards
Farmers Pawnee
Schneider
Springdale
Sterling No. 1
Sterling No.2
Henderson and Smith
Bravo
Iliff and Platte Valley
Julesburg System
South Reservation
Liddle
Misc. small ditches

9.3
40.9
4.8
9.8
1.25
3.1
4.8
0.5
0.05
2.0
6.5
6.5
0.1
0.15
3.05

92.8

for 7,500

acre-feet

.

Total
!I Excludes request by City of Sterling

23
