.

.

.

154.3

U. S.. Census data are county wide in scope. The project area
is an important part of the total four county area and represents
the most intensively cultivated lands. Operating units within the
project area are generally smaller in size than county averages.

tand Use

Type of Farm

The area has several important types of farms. Cash grain
farms predominate in the four county area because the associated
dry lands are used largely for wheat production. Livestock other
than dairy and poultry ranks second in importance. The third most
important type which predominates in the Narrows area are general
farms. Other types of farms are of minor significance.

According to U. S. Census data, farms are classified on the
basis of sales or anticipated sales of a product or group of
products representing 50 percent or more of the total value of
farm products sold during the year. A farm that has cash income
from three or more sources and does not meet criteria for any other
type is classified as a general farm. The number and percentage
distribution of farms by type in the four counties containing the
Narrows Unit are presented in table 10.

Land Use

Irrigated lands in the Narrows service area are used largely
for production of cultivated farm crops. This characteristic is
common to most irrigated areas in northeastern Colorado where a
relatively small acreage of irrigated land is used to grow wild hay
or to produce pasture.

The percentage distribution of principal irrigated crops
for the 10-year period 1953-1962 in the four counties that include

17
