A proposed plan for improving the water supply of the Chino
Valley Irrigation District in Yavapai CountJr, Arizona, is discussed
in the following pages. Specifically, this report outlines a plan
for partial solution of the irrigation problems of the area, indicates
the program of the District tOW<drd solution of its problems, and con-
cludes with'the recommendation that this program, which is being con-
ducted independently of the Bureau of Reclamation, be continuedo This
report is presented in brief form; substantiating materials are in the
files of this office,

Authority for the Report

2. This report has been prepared under the authority of the
Federal Reclamation Laws (Act of June 17, 1902, 32 Stat, 388, and
acts amendatory thereof or supplementary thereto).

Description of Area

3.' The Chino Valley Project area is located in Yavapai County,
Arizona, about 15 miles north of Prescott, The project embraces
2538 acres of land under irrigation in the valley of Granite Creek,
a tributary of the Verde River. Average elevation of the project
lands is about 4,700 feet above sea level. Average mean temperature
is 540 F. and the frost-free grovring season is about 180 days. Pre-
cipitation averages only about 12 inches annually and therefore irri-
gation is essential to successful crop production.

4. The soils are residual in nature; formed from basic granite
and lava. They are shallow on the low ridges but somewhat deeper in
the swales. Although the area has been in production for over 30
years, shallowness of soil over much of the area limits crops to
those .rith shallow roots.
