If the need for erosion control is critical, small areas may be mechanically treated and
seeded. But the probability for success is usually very low.

PINYON-JUNIPER - The pinyon-juniper community consists of low, evergreen trees which
rarely exceed 20 feet in height, are usually spaced far enough apart that their branches do not
touch, and have an understory of varying mixtures of shrubs and herbaceous plants, often with
nearly bare ground. The community makes up 14 % of the watershed or approximately 21,446
acres and is generally found between 4800 to 7900 feet elevation. Precipitation ranges from 8
to 16 inches per year. The pinyon-juniper community changes composition a1titudinally within
the watershed. The utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) is the most dominant species at the
lower elevations of the community and often extends into the sagebrush and grassland
communities and may be interspersed with them in some transitional zones. At somewhat higher
elevations the pinyon (Pinus edulis) enters the association, forming a mixed woodland throughout
the middle part and eventually replacing the juniper in the upper elevations.

Ecological sites found in this community are:

Semi-Desert shallow Loam (p/J)
Semi-Desert shallow sandy loam (PIJ)
Semi-Desert stony loam (P/J)
Semi-Desert very steep loam (J/P)
Upland shallow loam (PIJ)
Upland very steep loam (P/J)

Production on ecological sites in this community range from approximately 710 pounds per acre
in favorable years to 100 pounds per acre in poor years, with an average production of about
390 pounds per acre during normal years.

Potential for various types of treatments differ within associations of this community. There is
very little potential for any kind of treatment on the associations of the community on steep,
shallow soiled ecological sites, On sites with gentle slopes and deeper soils, particularly in the
transitional zones with the grassland and sagebrush communities, there is potential for fair to
good success in type conversions from P/J to grasslshrub types. This potential for treatment is
usually limited to small areas 50 - 200 acres at a time and should be considered and planned
carefully.

21
