<br />escarpments management practices are very limited. <br /> <br />5. <br /> <br />Soils on Mountain Sides and Mountain Benches - These are very shallow to deep, sandy <br />loam, loamy and clay loam soils of the higher elevations of the Book Cliffs with <br />precipitation of 12 to 18 inches including areas of 18 to 24 inches along the north <br />boundary. These soils are mainly on mountainsides (50 to 80 percent slope) including <br />small areas of benches and cuestas (3 to 12 percent slopes). The soils on benches are <br />fonning in residuum derived mainly from sandstone. Soils on the steeper mountain sides <br />are fonning from colluvium and residuum derived from sandstone and shale mainly of <br />the Mesaverde fonnation. The sUlface of these soils are covered with 10 to 80 percent <br />cobble, stones, and boulders. Old slumps and landslides are common throughout the <br />unit. Vegetation consist of Utah juniper, birchleaf mountain mahogany on the south <br />facing slopes, snowberry, Douglas flf, and curtleaf mountain mahogany. <br /> <br />o <br />Q <br />f\:.. <br />W <br /> <br />6. Sandstone Highlands - These are shallow, moderately deep and deep well drained sandy <br />loam and loamy soils on slopes ranging from 3 to 30 percent. The average precipitation <br />of this area is about 8 to 12 inches. The soils are mainly derived from sandstone of the <br />Dakota and Monison fonnation. They are mainly non-sa1ine to slightly saline and are <br />usually covered with coarse fragments from the sandstone fonnations. Vegetation consist <br />of a scattering of Utah Juniper and interspread sagebrush. The grass understory consists <br />of Wild Rye and Indian Ricegrass. <br /> <br />Detailed soils infonnation for the Greater Sagers Wash Watershed is contained in the Soil Survey <br />of Grand County, Utah, Central Part, This infonnation is being used in combination with other <br />resource data (vegetation, geology, topography) to evaluate watershed condition and to detennine <br />applicable erosion control measu'res, Refer to Table A-l.O for a tabular summary of soils <br />map units within the watershed showing setting, selected soil properties, (Salinity, K <br />Factor, Coarse Fragments, treatment opportunities and acreages). <br /> <br />Soils derived from the Mancos Shale Fonnation are of primary concern due to the high <br />erodibility and sa1ine--alkali characteristics (refer to Table A-I.O Tabular Summary of Soil Map <br />Units-Showing Setting, Selected Properties and Interpretations). These soils have a low site <br />productivity and low soils resilience (condition recovery) once they are disturbed, the impact is <br />usually long - lasting. Productivity of eroded sites and related quality of the drainage waters are <br />adversely affected, Refer to Figure A-2.0 showing locations and extent of non-sa1ine, slightly <br />saline, moderately saline and strongly saline soils.
