Min- <br /> <br /> <br />eraa quality of boiler feed water is an important factor in <br /> <br /> <br />the'rate of scale formation on heating 'surfaces, degree of <br /> <br />corrosion in the system, and quality of produced steam. In <br /> <br />, <br />coo1ing water systems, resistance to slime formation and <br /> <br />corrosion is affected by mineral quality. <br /> <br />4. 'Us,er Alternatives. The physical impacts of salinity upon <br /> <br />con~umptive uses of water were translated into economic values <br /> <br />by evaluating how each user might alleviate the effects of <br />sal~nity increases. <br /> <br />.. ~Iunicipali ties could: <br /> <br />(1) Do nothing and the residents would consume more soap <br /> <br />and detergents or purchase home softening units or experi- <br /> <br />ence accelerated frequency of replacement ,of water facilities. <br /> <br />(2) Build central water softening plants. <br /> <br />(3) Develop new>, less mineralized water supplies. <br /> <br />b.
