<br />co <br />r:<) <br />C"; <br />N <br /> <br />". <br /> <br />+++++++++++++ <br /> <br /> <br />.: 4\ 'If ;; <br /> <br />It !I <br />. r;L:",,~ <br /> <br />THE LANDMARKS <br /> <br />May 22, 1985 <br /> <br />Colorado River water was delivered by the Central Arizona Project (CAP) to <br />farms in the interior of Arizona for the first time on May 22, 1985. <br /> <br />The first water irrigated a cotton field near an 1-10 farm in the Harquahala <br />Valley Irrigation District, about 86 miles east of the Colorado River. <br /> <br />Delivery of the water was characterized as "the realization of a dream" that <br />had stirred the fancy of Arizonans for a century. <br /> <br /> <br />November 15, 1985 <br /> <br />Completion of the Central Arizona Project (CAP) to the Phoenix area was <br /> <br />marked by a ceremony at CAP headquarters and a banquet attended by about <br />1,000 people. U.s. Secretary of the Interior Donald P. Hodel and former Arizona <br />Governor Bruce Babbitt pressed the button that began the flow of water to <br />Tucson. <br /> <br />Part of the ceremony included unveiling a monument honoring the pioneers <br />who fought to win federal approval and financing of CAP construction. <br /> <br />
