I,
~.
Ii
f
I:
I:

--:.
")
)
<Q
.:::.
Q

SUMMARY (Continued)

Water development costs to provide the additional water supply re-
quired will total about $440 million. Annual operation, maintenance,
and replacement costs will be $8 million by 2020. Associated water de-
velopment costs, including on-farm development, will be about $370 mil-
lion. Associated annual operation, maintenance, and replacement costs
will be about $39 million by 2020.

The main problems confronting irrigated agriculture in the Region
are inadequate water supplies and competition for agricultural lands.
The fluctuating water supplies, particularly in years of low runoff,
cause a large annual variation in the irrigated acreage and reduction
in crop yields. High prices being paid to acquire land for urban and
suburban ,development results in the conversion of large acreages of
irrigated land. Problems associated with replacing these agricultural
lands with lands of comparable quality and its associated water supply
are far reaching as has already been implied.

n

I
