The system of numbering wells, springs, and other hydrologic-data sites in Utah is based on the cadastral land-survey system of
the U.S. Government. The number. in addition to designating the site. describes its position in the land net. The land-survey system
divides the State into four quadrants by the Salt Lake Meridian and Base Line. These quadrants are designated by the uppercase letters
A, B. C, and 0, indicating respectively, the northeast. northwest. southwest, and southeast quadrants. Numbers designating the township
and range, in that order. follow the quadrantleuer, and the three are enclosed in parentheses. For site locations in southwest Colorado.
the parentheses are preceded by the uppercase letter N, indicating the New Mexico Principal Meridian and Base Line. The uppercase
W letter T preceding the parentheses indicates a half township. The number after the parentheses indicates the section and is followed by
Ul three lowercase letters indicating the quarter section, the quarter-quarter section, and the quarter-quarter-quarter section-generally 10
~ acres for regular sections I; the lowercase lellers a. b, c, and d indicate, respectively, the northeast, northwest, southwest, and southeast
:."n quarters of each subdivision. The number after the leuers is the serial number of the site within the IO-acre tract. The letter S preceding
the serial number denotes a spring. Thus, (0-41-25) 17cdb-1 designates the first well constructed or cataloged in the northwest quarter
of the southeast quarter of the southwest quarter, section 17, T. 41 S., R. 25 E.

Sections within a township
R. 25 E.

31 32

r---- 6 miles
r-- 9.7 kilometers

Tracts within a section
Section 17

b a

b a

d

:1

(D-41-25)17cdb-1
rn

C
~
'C
.C
C ~ D
::;;
~
~
~
-'
"
UJ

-,

.
Al

'---.-.......,
Base Line

T.41S..R.25~i

.---.-.--..

I Although the basic land unit, the section. is theoretically I square mi. many sections are irregular. Such sections are subdivided
into I O-acre tracts, generally beginning at the southeast corner, and the surplus or shortage is taken up in the tracts along the north and
west sides of the section.
Figure 2.
