.

.

All area disturbed by pipeline construction will be revegetated.

a.

Soil Erosion and Sedimentation

N
...' .
1-"
C,,-.
,~

Under present conditions a considerable amount of erosion of canal
banks is occurring due to steep slopes and high water velocities.
Downstream siltation of gate turnouts and ditches occurs.
Pollution of Animas River with salt and sediment occurs.
The measure will stabilize critical eroding areas and sedimentation
and water pollution to the Animas River.

b.

Changes in Land Use

170 acres more cropland
converted from pasture.
irrigation efficiencies
systems of area.

as a result of sprinkler irrigation
Measure will provide incentive to improve
and will help stabilize the cropping

c. Changes in Air Quality

Air pollution, in the form of dust and exhaust fumes will be
temporarily increased during construction operations. Following
construction activities, air quality will return to preconstruct ion
levels.

d. Upland Wildlife Habitat

There are no known rare or endangered species in the measure area.
Construction activities will eliminate 15 acres of riparian habitat
along 7 miles of canal; some will be replaced after construction.

e. Bottomland and Stream Fishery

No bottomland or streams will be adversely affected by construction
activities. Water quality will be improved by less sediment and
sal ts.

f. Archeological and Historical Resources

The office of the state archeologist has been contacted. No
historical sites exist on the site. No archeological sites are
present on the site according to present state archeologist's
records. A professional archeological survey was conducted which
disclosed no significant surface sites.

g. Water Quality

Reducing erosion of the canal and field ditches will improve water
quality by reducing silt to downstream users and the Animas and
Florida rivers.

3

~',

'-"

,.
&,~~_.iz",;':~.;;i.
