Near Pike's Peak the <br />party split up and three members ascended to the <br />summit. One group followed the Arkansas River east- <br />ward and the other the Canadian River, which runs <br />generally south and east through the presen t states of <br />Texas and Oklahoma. The expedition was reunited at <br /> <br />Fort Smith, Ark. Long added valuable information to <br />the knowledge of the Louisiana Purchase, but most <br />significantly, he confirmed Pike's observation that the <br />Great Plains was the Great American Desert. <br />The colorful John C. Fremont made several expedi- <br />tions into the Far West between 1842 and 1853. These <br />included his journey of 1845 to the Mexican province of <br /> <br />16 <br />
