The area, located east of the Uncompahgre River, is part of the Lower Gunnison Basin Unit, East Side Lateral Project. Last summer, Reclamation released a draft environmental assessment (EA) for the proposed project and, until recently, was preparing the final EA. In January, it was determined that units (inClUding the East Side Lateral) authorized by congress under the colorado River Basin Salinity control Act were near their funding ceiling. The result is that Reclamation and the seven Colorado River Basin States involved in the salinity control project are conducting a review to prio~itize remaining work and match that priority list against remaining funds that congress had authorized to be spent. Since the East Side Lateral project was only a proposal, the decision was made to put the project on hold pending the results of the review. There is still a chance that congress could raise the ceiling on salinity control to include the East side Lateral project. Reclamation plans to complete the Lower Gunnison Basin Unit winter-stock water project currently underway in the Montrose and Delta area. # # # 001077
