<br />sity Institute of Environmental StudIes.
<br />Nineteen citizens or organizations de-
<br />manded an environmental impact state-
<br />ment and/or public hearings: sIxteen of
<br />those demanded both an EtB and hear-
<br />ings. The vast majority of these com.
<br />menta challeD&ed the request as bene.
<br />fitting only a special interest IfTOUP
<br />which, many comments asserted, Is act-
<br />Ing on prejudice and Isnorance. Many
<br />citizens further challenged the existence
<br />of any scientific basis for assuming that
<br />any benefit would In fad result. Sev-
<br />eral scientists otrered data Indicating
<br />against the advJ.<:abllity of grantfng the
<br />request and supportIng the contlnuanr-e
<br />In force on Secretary Rickers order of
<br />March 5, 1970. Also, several sheep
<br />ranchers questioned the merIt of this
<br />request.
