000375

.

.

modification work and installation of Government-furnished steel
liner panels will be taken shortly after the stilling basin is de-
watered. The repair work will be scheduled for completion before the
1968 spring flood season.

The Silt project is expected to provide irrigation service this
spring. The pumping plant, the canals, and laterals will be ready
for use following the final testing and construction cleanup. We ex-
pect that all contract work will be completed on Rifle Gap Dam within
the next 30 to 60 days. Reservoir storage was started late in Novem-
ber 1966, and the dead storage pool has been filled. The relocated
Colorado State Highway No. 325 was opened to public traffic on
January 27. This road will be surfaced during the coming spring.

The diversion works for the Smith Fork Feeder Canal of the Smith
Fork Project have not performed satisfactorily due to the excessive
sediment carried by the stream. We were asked to modify the diversion
structure, and a contract for this work was recently awarded. The
work should be finished early this spring.

The construction status of the Bostwick Park Project has not
changed appreciably since our last report to you. In mid-November
the contractor suspended operations for the winter and has not yet
resumed work. Last fall the damsite area was cleared and stripping
operations were nearly completed before the heavy snowstorms made
further work impractical. We propose to take bids early in 1968 for
constructing about 12 miles of new laterals to serve the project area.

Repairs to the lining of the Gunnison Tunnel on the Uncompahgre
Project are progressing according to schedule. This concrete had be-
come greatly weakened by cracking and was in need of steel sets
through most of its length. During the construction season some
difficulty was experienced with slight vertical settling of the sets,
but this was corrected when the first invert was installed. The con-
tract is now about 65 percent completed. The tunnel will be ready
for water delivery this spring.

Of great significance in our expansion of the Colorado River
~fStorage Project construction program is the start of construction on
J/the $325 million Bonneville Unit of the Central Utah Project. Bids
were opened on February 16 for construction of the 2,920-foot-long,
l50-foot-high Starvation Dam near Duchesne, Utah. An apparent low
bid of $8,182,750 was received. Award of the contract is pending.
Bids were also opened during February for the Knight Diversion Dam on
the Duchesne River and for the Starvation Feeder Conduit which will
convey water from the Knight Diversion Dam over to Starvation Reser-
voir. The Starvation Feeder Conduit is approximately one mile long
and will consist of a concrete-lined tunnel about 7 feet in diameter.
Total construction cost of the Starvation complex is estimated to be
about $20 million.

2
