Some species <br /> will regenerate when twigs and limbs are broken from the <br /> original plant, are deposited in debris, and take root. Some <br /> species will regenerate by sprouting following disturbance of <br /> the existing root system. <br /> Narrowleaf cottonwood requires fresh deposits of sediments <br /> during seed drop. Therefore flood stages must reach the <br /> floodplains occupied by cottonwood. <br /> Flooding and the accompanying disturbance are important <br /> factors in the ecological processes maintaining the position, <br /> size. and condition of the rioarian zone. <br /> <br />Pageiv <br />
