<br />," <br /> <br />C2'~5! <br /> <br />the greater sandhill crane. <br /> <br />None of these species occur in abundance but <br /> <br />a re common. <br /> <br />Waterfowl and shorebirds concentrate along the water courses <br /> <br />at the lower elevations a rriving in the a rea during the spring and leaving <br /> <br />in the fall. <br /> <br />Sandhill cranes have been observed near Hog Park Reservoir <br /> <br />but usually nest further south in Routt County. <br /> <br />Non game birds present in the area include the passennes, flickers, <br /> <br />magpies, crow, woodpeckers, rock dove, swallows and hummingbirds. <br /> <br />Most of these species are migratory flying south in the fall and returning in <br /> <br />the spring. <br /> <br />During the warmer months non game birds are widely <br /> <br />distributed throughout the a rea and utilize a va riety of habitat. <br /> <br />The most <br /> <br />common winter residents include the crow, raven, magpie, flicker, Steller's <br /> <br />jay, Clark's nutcracker and horned lark. <br /> <br />Raptor s <br /> <br />Raptors, or birds of prey, which are found in the study area include <br /> <br />eagles, falcons, owls, and vultures. <br /> <br />Some are resident species while <br /> <br />others live in the area only part of the year. <br /> <br />Because of different habits <br /> <br />raptors require a variety of habitat present in the area. <br /> <br />Resident birds are the golden eagle, red-tailed hawk, marsh hawk" <br /> <br />goshawk, Cooper's hawk, sharp-shinned hawk, great-horned owl, and <br /> <br />both the long-eared and short-eared owl. <br /> <br />Since they remain in the a rea <br /> <br />year-round, they utilize a varil/ty of habitats including coniferous forests, <br /> <br />meadows, parks and rangeland. <br /> <br />They normally concentrate al lower elevations <br /> <br />-7- <br />
