"\ <br />~.. ..'- ... <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />ENCAMPMENT RIVER <br /> <br />Fish and Wildlife <br /> <br />The Encampment River provides high quality habitat for a wide <br /> <br />variety of fish and wildlife species. <br /> <br />Fran1 its beginning frorr) the <br /> <br />Continental Divide, the river flows northwa rd through two vege ta ti ve <br /> <br />life zones, the Canadian and Transition, to the Colorado - Wyoming <br /> <br />state line. <br /> <br />The mountainous area is generally ca'1>osed of spruce,fir <br /> <br />forests at higher elevations, and lodgepole pine at lower elevations. <br /> <br />Nun1erous parks, meadows and aspen groves a re interspersed anlong the <br /> <br />timber and excellent riparian habitat occurs along the river at lower <br /> <br />elevations. <br /> <br />A partial list of fish and wildlife found in the study area is appended. <br /> <br />It does not include numerous'species of waterfowl, reptiles, amphibians <br /> <br />shrews, or bats. <br /> <br />Most of the species are resident ot the a rea although <br /> <br />Tnany of the birds are migrants. <br /> <br />Big Game <br /> <br />Big game speCies in the area are deer, elk, black bear, mountain lion, <br /> <br />bighorn sheep and a few antelope. <br /> <br />Approxirnately 400 deer use the area during the spring, SUI11tl1er, and <br /> <br />fall months. <br /> <br />During the sun11ner they concentrate alollg the river botton) <br /> <br />a.nd small tributaries where food, wate r and cover a re abundant.' During <br /> <br />the winter most deer migrate northward to lower winter range outside the <br />
