002939

TRAVEL INFLUENCE ZONE - 4-LANE HIGHWAY WEST OF WOLF CREEK PASS

The scenic view from these zones will be maintained or enhanced
on a continuous basis through a variety of forest management
practices. The clearcut area in the foreground resulted from
logging made necessary by an insect epidemic. Forest practices
proposed in this plan will reduce this catastrophic insect,
disease and fire probability.

Dead trees and trees having a high risk of dying within the next
10 years have been logged from a strip above the highway.

The area between the highway and the clearaut, at the right hand
of the photo, was logged in 1973-74. This intermediate cut was
a preparatory step in the shelterwood silvicultural system. The
narrow roads that have been constructed in that area are used
for tree removal only, and are closed between successive logging
operations. The area to the left has. not been logged.
