t...,;(,)lU(.Gurs

~',""TII!fIC-'7P03

----, ~ -

Brewery May
Take Poudre
River Water

by NOR$ Staff

The Anheuser.Busch Company recently
announced plans to build a beer brewery in
Fort Collins, Colorado, and area residents
fear that the Poudre Aiver will be dammed
to supply the operation.
The Poudre River is the cIose:st wtlitewarer
river for millions of residents of Colorado's
"front range" cities (see CURRENTS May
1983.1 It contains many miles of Class III to
IV whitewater that attract kayakers, rafters,
fishermen, campers and picnickers. For
years. area residents have been urging Con-
gress to designate the Poudre as a Wild and
Scenic Aiver.
Beer manufacturing uses a lot 01 water.
According to planning documents, the new
brewery could use up to 55% as much water
as the entire city used in 1980. New auxiliary
industries and residential growth would fur-
ther increase the water use. This would in
turn create demand for new dams on Ihe
creeks that flow into the Poudre, or on the
Poudre itseH.
The brewery may also burn coal, causing
smog and acid rain in Ihe area.
The Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce
has started a campaign to convince voters
to support the new brewery plans, with
newspaper and radio advertising. But many
residents hope to prevent the breWtlry and
the resulting dams and pollution. They plan
a campaign 10 prevent the city from spen-
ding the money and making the com-
mitments needed lor the brewery. BOll 8892, Fort Collins, CO B052S.
Wild and Scenic designatioo, wtlich would
preserve the Poudre trom damming. can only
be decided by Congress, but the politician
who can best inffuenCf! the progress of dam-
ming plans is Colorado Governor Aichard
Lamm, who is an occasional kayaker and
rafter himseH and is aware of the tree-flowing
Poudre's value to Colorado. Whether you
five in Colorado or another state, you can af-
fect the future of the Poudre by wflting to
Governor Lamm, urging him to keep dams
off the Poudre.
