SUMMARY (Continued)

were held in Duchesne and Roosevelt to present alternatives based on

this plan to the public for their information and to solicit additional

ideas or concerns. The plan will be refined as the feasibility study

progresses.

The plan calls for lining a total of about 204 miles of canals

and laterals, which would reduce the salinity at Imperial Dam by about

6.7 mg/L. The most cost-effective improvements will be identified as

part of continuing plan formulation and refinement. A fish and wildlife

coordination report and a mitigation plan to compensate for the loss of

wildlife habitat due to the canal and lateral lining program are being

prepared.

Total construction costs are estimated at $88.8 million on the basis

of January 1981 prices, exclusive of the wildlife mitigation plan. This

results in a cost-effectiveness of about $1,092,000 for each mg/L of

salinity reduction at Imperial Dam.

FOllowing transmittal of the feasibility report to Congress and

authorization of the unit for construction, advance planning studies will

begin. Costs and designs will be refined and operation and maintenance

contracts will be negotiated and signed with the water users.

Assuming Congress authorizes construction of the unit in 1985,

construction could begin in 1989. Monitoring of system salt loads would

continue throughout advance planning and during and after construction to

determine effectiveness of the plan.

~,~
00C~LO

ii
