from the weathering of the shale formations. Soils range in texture from

sandy loam to clay, and vary in color from light-yellowish brown to light

reddish-brown. Where drainage conditions are favorable, salinity and

alkali problems are not significant.

Vegetation

Riparian vegetation associated with canals and laterals in the study

area covers approximately 2,000 acres and includes mainly quack grass,

canary grass, goldenrod, lettuce, Jim Hill mustard, sedge, willows, and

Russian olive. Riparian associations beyond canals near seep areas,

springs, and intermittent drainages are primarily sedge and rush-grass

followed closely by cottonwood-buffaloberry and cottonwood associations.

WillOW, cottonwood-willow, Russian olive, and buffaloberry are present to

a lesser degree, and alder, birch-alder, and.squawbush are uncommon.

predominant dryland vegetation associations adjacent to the canals

are big sage, black sage, and shrub-grass associations. Juniper and

shadscale, greasewood, and saltbush associations are also present in

the general area.

Wetland Habitat

Seepage from some Uinta Basin area canals and laterals has created

wetland habitat in several'portions of the unit area. These wetlands

provide forage and cover for wildlife. About 2,000 acres of wetlands are

associated with canal.and lateral seepage along the systems presently

being studied.

""'f j'" [;1 -.
t;"" I.J.... j

Fish and Wildlife

While the canals have no fishery value because of intermittent

flows, the Duchesne, Uinta, and Green Rivers provide both cold and warm

9
