<br />COLORADO RIVER STORAGID PROJECT <br /> <br />5 <br /> <br /> <br />HThis situation exists even under the condition of selling power at 6 milIs <br />under Federal construction and 6.57 mills under the utility proposal/' <br />Seoretary Seaton ,oon May 18, 1960, announced the marketing areas within <br />which the hydroelectric power to be generated at the multipurpose dam of the <br />Colorado River storage project will be sold and used and the criteria under which <br />the power will be Bold. <br />Authorizing l.egisla:tion for the Colorado River storage project was approved <br />in 1956. The storage project includes four major storage dams and reservoirs, <br />of which three will h{l.ve 4ydroelectric plants. They are Glen Canyon Damr on <br />the Colorado River in northern AriZOllf., started in 1956, the first power antici- <br />pated to be available in 1964, ultimate installed capacity! 9001000 kilowattsi <br />Flaming Gorge, on the Green River in northern Utah, started in 1957, first power <br />antioipated to be available in 1963, ultimate installed capacitYl 108,000 kilo- <br />wattsi Curecanti unit, consisting of a series of dams on the Gunnison River in <br />Colorado, total installed capacity estimated at about 160,000 kilowatts. <br />Secretary Seaton said today that prompt action was necessary on transmission <br />line arrangements sinoe under the all-Federal system which he has approved <br />additional appropriations will be needed from Congress for the fiscal years 1961 <br />and 1962. <br />The Congress last year provided $5 million to initiate construction of trans~ <br />mission lines from Glen Canyon to Curecanti and from Flaming Gorge to Oak <br />Creek. Construction of these lines is proceeding on schedule but they will not <br />be sufficient to move the power expected to be available from Flaming Gorge in <br />1963 and Glen Canyon in 1964. <br />The text of the November 30, 1960, memorandum from Commissioner Dominy <br />to Seoretary Seaton is attached.
