<br /> <br />F ACT SHE E T <br /> <br />CLOSED BASIN DIVISION, SAN LUIS VALLEY PROJECT <br /> <br />The Closed Basin Division is a well field project designed to supplement <br /> <br />water presently available in the Rio Grande Valley. Congress authorized <br /> <br />the', Bureau'of ReCla!111!J;:'wn, to build the. pr6jectto assist ,Colorado,"New <br /> <br />Mexico and Texas with their water needs. Construction of the project <br /> <br />will provide water to help Colorado meet its annual water delivery obli- <br /> <br />gat ions under the Rio Grande Compact and provide additional water for <br /> <br />use in the Rio Grande Basin. The project includes water for wildlife <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />purposes aod provide other wildlife benefits and recreational oppor- <br /> <br />tunities. <br /> <br />Some ground water is now being lost by evaporation. This water will <br /> <br />be pumped from about 170 wells, conveyed through pipelines to a 42-mile <br /> <br />long canal, and delivered to the Rio Grande River. Many of these wells <br /> <br />and pipelines and ,parts, of the canal'will'be'located on what:is'now <br /> <br />private land. Private land will be purchased for project purposed when- <br /> <br />necessary. Where land to be used for the project is owned by the State, <br /> <br />the State will provide the necessary land for the facilities. <br /> <br />The Bureau of Reclamation intends to keep owners and the public informed <br /> <br />as the project developes.
