MELLON: I'm not completely done yet.

I have another question for the Corps of Engineers. Have

you ever lost one of your darns?

.

PRESIDING OFFICER: No.

MR. MELLON: That answers my question. The

dams that were lost in the east or wherever tiley were

I've got it down on paper, I don't know where it is --

PRESIDING OFFICER: They're private dams and

as a result President Carter and several other presidents

and Congress passed a Dam Safety Inspection Act and the

first part of the act was to go out and simply identify

where all of these dams were, non-federal dams. And then

secondly, to reinforce, to tighten up on our own inspection

program of our own structures. And unfortunately, that was

the first phase, to identify them. The second phase was

-

after you identified them, then to begin to do very detailed

analysis of their safety. Funds were provided up until, I

believe it was last year to do the second phase. Insofar

and I don't want to get -- we're not here to talk about

world-wide dam safety programs tonight. The purpose of the

i
I' meeting tonight was to discuss re-regulation of Hoover Dam,
'I
,

but just let me put a bottom line to all of this which iSl

that insofar as the State of Arizona is concerned, we have

..I I ,: J \ III 1>1:, d r :11
