Publication of this report effectively ends the study;
but as you know, we have entered the operational phase where we are using and
improving the database and testing the QUERY program which was developed as part
of the study activity.

This ends three years of work which was begun at the Missouri River Governors'
Conference held in Omaha, Nebraska, May 3-5, 1977. Then Governor Joseph Teasdale
of Missouri introduced the following resolution which was seconded by then Governor
J. James Exon of Nebraska and passed unanimously:

"That the several States that together comprise the Missouri
River Basin petition the Federal Government - through the
Missouri River Basin Commission - to develop within the
several States a cooperative water data system adequate for
assessing the current and future water uses within the Basin.
This data base is to be used as a predictive tool to evaluate
effects of individual water development projects in the Basin
as they relate to long-range planning, water use and water
needs. fI

,.

The Missouri River Basin Hydrology Study was initiated to address those needs,
and federal funds were made available for a start in 1980. Each of the Missouri
basin states matched the federal funds with in-kind services. With termination of the
Commission on September 30, 1981, the Missouri Basin States Association assumed
responsibility for and completed the study.

Copies of the report are being sent to each of the basin governors, the basin
congressional delegation, study participants and a list of individuals and organizations
which previously expressed interest in receiving a copy of the final report. We do
have some extra copies that can be made available upon request.

/

CMH/pr
Enclosure

President. William W. Crew.. Iowa
Secretary. WarnD R.
