forest accretions - the increased water vield from a
forested watershed resulting from forest management
practices. Practices such as harvest, thinning, or road
construction remove vegetation, thus reducing ground
cover and lessening the consumptive water use by
plants. As a result, surface runoff is increased and an
accretion to streamflow occurs.
forest type - a classification term relating to the dom-
inant species of tree or trees in a forest stand as de-
termined by species composition or crown class.
full service irrigation - that irrigation in which the
entire crop irrigation requirement is available to pro-
vide full crop production in at least 8 out of 10 years.
graphic - representation by lines, bars or other geo-
metric shapes.
ground water - water beneath the land surface that
is contained in the zone of saturation. In a few local-
ities, the top of a saturated zone may coincide with
the land surface; but in most cases, water-saturated
formations may be reached only by digging or drilling.
ground waler irrigation - irrigation utilizing water
pumped from subsurface aquifers.
hard copy .- paper copy or similar medium that pro-
vides a document of computer output.
hardware - computer equipment, such as the CRT,
printer, plotter, mainframe or other physical items.
historic depletion - the depletions which have oc-
curred in the Missouri basin in the period 1944-1978,
given in acre-feet, by month.
1978 level depletion - that part of the net depletion
calculated by multiplying the historic unit rate of
water used by the difference in depletors between 1978
and any years 1944-1977.
hydraulic conductivity or permeability of an aquifer -
the volume of water that will move in unit time under
a unit hydraulic gradient through a unit area measured
at right angles to the direction of flow, expressed as
gallons per day per square foot.
information - data that has been arranged into a
meaningful and useful form.
input - the process of insertion of data into a data
processing system. Opposite of output.
interactive program - a computer program that re-
quires that the user input data during its execution.
irrigated lalld - land on which water is intentionally
applied to a crop one or more times during the growing
season for the purpose of enhanced agricultural pro-
duction.
livestock daily water requirements - the gross amount
of water needed per head per day for maintenance of
physiological functions. In this study, requirements
for five classes of livestock were given. While the re-
quirements vary with regional climates and the season,
constant rates were used basinwide in this study.
minimum {conservation} tillage - 8 form of non-in-
version tillage that retains protective amounts of res-
idue mulch on the surface throughout the year.
Includes no tillage, strip tillage, stubble mulching, and
other types of non-inversion tillage.
narrative - in terms of the MBSA database, a written
summary of general information, compacts and court

10

decrees, water rights, and state water laws.
net radiation - the difference between the downward
and upward solar and long-wave radiation flux passing
through a horizontal plane just above the ground sur-
face.
net streamflow depletion - the sum of the historic
depletions and the 1978 level depletions for a partic-
ular year.
node basin - a delineated hydrologic area that is
drained by a river system; a subset of an accounting
unit.
node basin number - a six-digit number used to iden-
tify the 93 node basins that make up the Missouri
River basin drainage, created from the accounting unit
number.
node basin outflow point - the locations throughout
the Missouri basin at which depletions and depleted
flows are summarized. Ninety-three such nodes were
selected based upon four primary criteria:
a. U.S. Water Resources Council accounting unit
outflow points;
b. State boundaries;
c. Mouth of a major stream; and
d. Major reservoir outflow point (conservation stor-
age exceeding 200,000 acre-feet)
nonbeneficial consumptive use - con~umptive use of
water without any resulting direct economic benefit
to man. An example is the use of water by riparian
vegetation.
on-farm efficiency - the volume of water stored in the
soil root zone and used by the crop, expressed as a
ratio or percentage of the volume of water delivered
to the farm. On-farm efficiency characterizes both the
on-farm distribution system and the field application
systems.
output - the process of receiving data or information
out of a data processing system.
partial cut - a type of timber harvest in which only
selected trees within the timber sale boundary are cut.
partial service irrigation - that type of irrigation in
which the entire crop irrigation requirement is not
available beyond a certain point in the growing season.
A cutoff date of July 15th was used in the hydrology
study for the upper basin states (MT, WY, NO, SO).
In the lower basin states (NE, lA, KS, MO, MN, CO),
one-half of the monthly crop irrigation requirement
was provided for the irrigation season.
percent possible sunshine - the total time during
which bright sunshine is received in a specified period
(monthly for this study) expressed as a percentage of
the total time during which bright sunshine is possible.
The possible length of time varies with latitude at any
given date and with the date at a given latitude.
range pitting - a mechanical grazing land treatment
for the purpose of reducing surface runoff.
real.time - pertaining to the performance of data pro-
cessing during the actual time the process is underway
in order that results of the data being processed can
be used in guiding the process.
record - a data set under a given file name.
regeneration - a term relating to the regrowth of for-
