It was
closed and capped and the drill
rig dismantled,

The Environmental Protection
Agency (EP A) continues to
monitor the EPA-issued Under-
ground Injection Control (VIC)
permit and has determined that
the as-built well is adequate to
meet the design criteria.

-

The 5-1/2 inch special high
nickel alloy injection string was
ordered and produced in
Hereford, England, and in
Huntington, West Virginia. The
tubing string was threaded in
Alabama and is currently awaiting
delivery as needed. The inl'ection
wen No.1 should be comp ete by
late 1988.

Construction of the 4-mile brine
pipeline was completed in
September 1988, The brine
pipeline will transport the brine
from the prod uction well field to
the disposal well. The surface
treatment building is complete
and the wellhead injection build-
ing construction is underway,
This injection building will house
three 1600 horsepower high
pressure pumps.

Following completion of the
injection wen the surface facilities
will need to be completed, hooked

8273.100.40

ll;$ ;l;)e~trij~ntoft~e'II.r~htil'
'lll'eanof.R~lamatio!t ......... .,
.~. 2uarterly'Re~ort ol{tbe
. In the foreground is the spill prevention pond.
The relief line which penetrates the flexible membrane pond liner is visible. The brine
injection pumps will be used to pump the Paradox Valley brine into Injection Test Well
No.1 at an anticipated rate of 650 gallons pei minute. Normal operation will utilize two
pumps with the third as a backup.

up to the well and tested. Deep
wen injection is expected to start
around mid-summer of 1989.

A contract was initiated with
the Department of Energy and the
U,S, Geological Survey to analyze
the injection brine and resident for-
mation brine in the well to deter-
mine if the brines are compatible
for injection. Initial determination
appears to be satisfactory,

EP A is currently reviewing
proposed changes in the monitor-
ing systems. In addition, EP A
will review injection wne comple-
tion data, and monitor initial com-
patibility studies and test results

to assure that the well functions as
planned,

Lower Gunnison
Basin

Preconstruction funds for FY
1989 have been approved for the
winter water portion of the Lower
Gunnison Basin Unit. Monies in
the amount of $250,000 would be
.obligated to the Uncompahgre
Valley Water Users Association to
collect design data on their system
in preparation for construction,
