LOVE July 15, 1970
GaVel'nor

Mr. Jim Carrico
Superintendent
Great Sand Dunes National Monument
Post Office Box 60
Alamosa, Colorado 81101

Dear Mr. Carrico:

I am writing to express the position of the State of Colorado
with regard to the proposed Gr<'Oat Sand Dunes Wilderness Area under con-
sideration in connection with the Great Sand Dunes National Monument in
Colorado.

The Colorado Geological Survey and the Division of Game,
Fish and Parks both attended the publ ic hearings held in Alamosa on July I
and a statement was presented on behal f of the Division of Game, Fish,
and Parks by Mr. Lonnie Pippin, the Commissioner for the Second District.
A written statement dated July 10 was prepared by the Colorado Geological
Survey.

I am supporting the recommendations of the National Park
Service insofar as the boundaries of the wilderness proposal are concerned.
I would also I ike to request your serious consideration of the proposal by
the Division of Game, Fish and Parks to designate the Medano pass Road
within the monument as a primary road for publ ic use for the period from
September I to November 30 each year and as a secondary road for the re-
mainder of the year. Should the experience with this dual classification of
the Medano Poss Road prove unsatisfactory, then I think it should be the pre-
rogative of the National Park Service to change the designation as they feel
necessary.

Thank you for the opportunity to present for tl-e State of Colorado
these recommendations for the record in this case.

JAL:TTE:u

(/~:rrel~ ~

~.
