Box 60
LAlamosa, Colorado 81101

11111 .:
~,

(j

Dear Sir:

We have reviewed the proposal of the National Park Service for
the 28,350 acre Great Sand Dunes Wilderness. We concur that
this proposal would make a suitable addition to the National
Wilderness Preservation System.

It is critical, however, that the area not be extended to
interfere with public and administrative travel access along
Medano Creek. This access is needed for big game herd adminis-
tration and public use on adjacent National Forest lands. Eight
hundred acres of private land were recently purchased in the
drainage with L&WCF funds, part of which is planned for the
development of two recreation sites to supplement those of the
National Monument.

To meet the growing demand, the Medano Pass Trail is authorized
for trail scooter use in our Sangre de Cristo Transportation
Plan.

Other administrative needs in this drainage are the maintenance
of two ditches which divert water to the east side of Medano
Pass, the maintenance of range livestock fences, and access for
fire control.

Sincerely,

c~i~<<~i if: (iff I

T7..~..'~~ ?., GJ-lI--.r?
,"-: 7....,-,,:<:.~, ::'?r-v1c~
~ r '.. .

6200-11 (1{69)
