by proximity to some identifiable feature and town; and by distance
upstream from mouth. Drainage area in square miles is given for all
stations, except for three partial record stations for which drainage
areas were not available. Statement of available record gives the period
during which observations of water temperatures were obtained in
conjunct ion wi th di scharge measurements. A pa ragraph of "remarks" Is
included for those stations where streamflow and temperature may have been
affected by reservoirs, diversions, return flow from irrigation, or other
factors.

Water temperature data for each station are summarized in two tables and
four graphs. The first table summarizes the observed temperatures for
the period of record giving the mean, standard deviation (S.D.), range
between the maximum and the minimum, and number of observations (N).
The five lowest and the five highest water temperatures are listed with
the corresponding time of observation, discharge, and date. All
temperatures are given to the nearest one-half degree Celsius. The
discharge is given In cfs. (cubic feet per second).

The second table is a statistical presentation of the observed temperature
data by month for the period of record. Included in this table are:
minimum and maximum temperature, range, mean, standard deviation, and
number of observations.

Three graphs show the frequency distributions of time of observation,
discharge, and temperature. The three distributions have a variable
scale on the X-axis showing the number of observations. The value "N"
represents the number of observations. The scale on the Y-axis for the
discharge and temperature frequency plots designates the midpoint of
each range.

The i nte rva 1 size of the ranges is given be low the graphs. I n the group
of largest discharges on the graph, the symbol> is used to indicate
discharges greater than a specified amount (for example, the station
06814000, Turkey Creek near Seneca, Ks. shows 13 discharges >439 cfs).

The fourth graph is a plot of temperature versus date, which illustrates
the distribution of all observed temperature data available. Some
inconsistency may occur between the number of plotted Items and the
monthly summary table because the computer program does not allow for
duplication of items. Both the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales are shown
for the convenience of the user. Basic data for the Items in this graph,
including data, time of observation, temperature, and discharge, are
available in computer accessible form at the office of the U.S. Geological
Survey in Lawrence, Kansas.

'"

.

4
