)

containing a world-class trout fishery would be
wild. None of the North Fork is proposed for
designation, nor is the short section from the
confluence to Strontia Springs Reservoir.

The Denver Water Department is opposed
to this designation, as it would prevent the
construction of a smaller version of Two Forks
Dam and Reservoir.

.'

.

~ WHAT YOU CAN DO

Write to: Rick Cables, Pike-San Isabel National Forest, Attn: Wild and Scenic Rivers Coordinator, 1920
Valley Dr., Pueblo, CO 81008. Be sure your letter is postmarked or hand delivered no later than July 10,
though late letters may be accepted.

Include some or, all of the following points in your letter:
. State that federal designation is the best way to protect the South Platte River's outstanding values.
. Praise the Forest Service for courageously proposing partial designation in the face of opposition from
Denver water intereS"".s.
. Especially praise the proposed wild designations for Cheesman Canyon and part of the river between Corral
Creek and the south end of Cheesman Reservoir. The former will protect a world-class fishery.

Request that the recommendation be extended and strengthened in the following ways:
. The entire section from Corral Creek to Cheesman Reservoir should be wild_ except near the popular 4 WD
road crossing at Corral Creek where the recommended designation should be either scenic or recreational for no
more than V. mile on either side of the road.
. All roads in the corridor of 'I. mile on either side of the river in this section should be closed. except for the
Corral Creek road. Note that the Forest Service has already closed the Northrup Gulch Road V. mile from the'
river to reduce soil erosion, and is proposing to do the same for Metberry Creek Road. One river crossing in
this mostly still-primitive corridor should be sufficient for motorized recreation.
. Ask that at least Part of the North Fork be recommended for desil!Ilation. especially the section downstream
of Estabrook, which is entirely on national forest land and qualifies for scenic designation. Note that this
designation will help protect habitat for the only known population of Pawnee montane skipper, a threatened
species of butterfly.
. Ask that the upper end of Waterton Canyon, from the confluence downstream to Strontia Springs Reservoir,
be recommended for recreational designation. This would protect a short but exciting run for experienced
boaters.

.

Colorado Environmental Coalition
777 Grant Street, Suite 606
Denver, CO 80203

Address Correction Requested

Nonprofit
Organization
U.S. Postage
PAID
Denver, CO
Permit 1005

AR67 AD

.
