.\

.

.

....'.
~
CJ

100,;-..

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is an aggregate of carbonates, bicarbonates,
chlorides, sulfates, phosphates, nitrates, etc., of calcium, magnesium,
manganese, sodium, potassium, and other cations which form salts. High TDS
solutions have the capabi Ii ty of changing the chemical nature of water.
High TDS concentrations exert varying degrees of osmotic pressures and
often become lethal to the biological inhabitants of an aquatic environ-
ment. The common term for TDS is salt.

Total Salt Load is the total quantity of salts, as measured by dry mass or
volume, that is dissolved in a specific amount of water (discharge)
passing a given point during a given time.

Transmountain Diversion is the total amount of water diverted out of its
original basin.

Virgin Flow is the historical flow at the point of measurement corrected
for the effects of manmade developments in the drainage basin above the
point of measurement.

Water Year 1S the 12 month period, October 1 through September 30. The
water year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends and which
includes 9 of the 12 months. Thus, the year ending September 30, 1978, is
called the "1978 water year."

127
