0281

Given an estimate of the quantity of water that could be made available by retirement of marginal land
and the acreage of productive crop lands available, an analysis of the water requirement for ma:iT.lIm
production of major crops grown, compared to the quantity of water historically available will lead to
estimates of the potential of land-to-land transfer within the system.

Alternative 6: Land Fallowing

This alternative can best be evaluated by having stockholders react to various scenarios wherein an
annual water demand by buyer or lessee is given and several fallow alternatives are stated.

Typical wheat fallow rotation in which the land is clean-tilled may not be acceptable because of wind
erosion hazards. Other cropping alternatives to traditional fallow may yield equivalent quantities for
lease or sale. One alternative might be to remove all irrigation from established alfalfa for one year,
<)r perhaos apply only one irri~ation. The fanner would have no tillage costs or herbicide costs for the
season and likely th~stamtwould be retam~ Other alternatives could readily be defined by, t.. '
agriculturists including fanners in the area. L(:'l if\! I
~ ~'1o-;Y
~~~ ~~_I
~~(~~
Q~T- '
"'I \ I
.
Define fallow scenarios:
remove water from alfalfa for one year (no crop)
remove water from alfalfa for all but one irrigation
plant land used for annual crops with low water use crop (e.g. sudan grass, cover
crop) requiring no irrigation.
. Define water allocation with each scenario.
. Identify lands for fallowing. Array the variables and detennine values.
. Determine levels of acres committed by fallowing by gradation of soil type, productivity or
other selected variables.
. Identify and quantify positive and negative impacts at each level of fallowed acreage.
Alternative 7: Interruptible Supply
The Ft. Lyon operates in five (5) divisions, with extensive lateral systems. Rerum flow characteristics
vary from location to location. Due to this extent of the Ft. Lyon system, interruptible supply
alternatives should consider implementation of programs for certain segments.-?f the ditch, rather than \\ ~ .v
the entire system. cy
Approaches could include: . -----
.
interruptible supply lands only n~ar the tail of the ditch
.
interruptible supply only on lands at the ends of laternls.
20
