<br />0270 <br /> <br />TASK 3A - Description of the Ft. Lvon Canal Companv Svstern <br /> <br />The Ft. Lyon Canal Company is a mutual inigation company that supplies water for the irrigation of <br />approximately 92,600 acres in Otero, Bent, and Powers counties. The canal company obtains its water <br />through the Ft. Lyon Canal which has senior direct flow water rights from the Arkansas River. <br />Additionally, Ft. Lyon receives water through the Ft. Lyon storage canal which supplies water to Horse <br />Creek and Adobe Creek Reservoirs. The direct flow and storage rights of the Ft. Lyon Canal Company <br />are presented in Table 3. <br /> <br />[n addition, the Ft. Lyon Canal also has the capability of delivering water to the Great Plains Reservoirs <br />through the Kicking Bird bifurcation on behalf of the Amity Canal. These relationships are set forth <br />in Civil Action No. 2158, Bent County District Court (Oct. 31, 1944). The Ft. Lyon Canal Company <br />additionally has the right for the use of 5,483 acre-feet of Queen Reservoir water. The exhibits in <br />Kansas v Colorado state that the total average annual diversions of the company (1940-1985) were <br />210,222 acre-feet. Yield by source is presented in Table 4. <br /> <br />Water is distributed from the Ft. Lyon Canal through more than 200 laterals along its 11O-rnile length. <br />Average ditch losses have been estimated at 18.24% and lateral losses at 10.00%. In describing the <br />Ft. Lyon Canal Company, we shall prepare a description of the physical diversion, transmission, and <br />water storage system; the organization structure; and annual operating procedures. <br /> <br />Specific elements of Task 3A include: <br /> <br />. Describe the physical systems including all canals, reservoirs, and ancillary features. Provide <br />a map of these facilities. <br /> <br />. Ust of the historic diversions and depletions. Records compiled in the Kansas v. Colorado <br />litigation will be utilized for our analysis. <br /> <br />. Describe the conveyance losses, seepage and rerum flow patterns. <br /> <br />. Document Ft. Lyon water rights and prior yields, including storage under the Pueblo winter <br />water program at Pueblo Reservoir and John Martin Reservoir. <br /> <br />. Description irrigated acreage, water use, and scheduling; identify the lateral node network; <br />review the irrigation methods and efficiency; and describe the normal crop patterns and trends. <br /> <br />. Identify and describe ground water uses within the service area. <br /> <br />9 <br />
