Cimarron Dredging Environmental Assessment

Division of Wildlife (CDOW). This stretch of river has an excellent rainbow and brown trout
fishery. These populations are self-sustaining; however. whirling disease has greatly reduced
recruitment for rainbow trout. The CDOW conducts an annual fall (September) survey on the
Gunnison River below the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. CDOW does not
directly stock Crystal Reservoir: however, Crystal Reservoir does receive fish that survive the
entrainment from Morrow Point Reservoir and the Cimarron River. Morrow Point Reservoir has
been stocked with kokanee and Colorado River cutthroat trout. Entrainment from Blue Mesa
Reservoir also provides a significant number of fish in Morrow Point Reservoir (Hebein 2001).

Fish species lists for both Crystal and Morrow Point Reservoirs are identical even though the
sources of species varies. These include: Kokanee (Oncorhynchus nerkus), rainbow trout, brown
trout, brook trout (Saivelinas jonlinaiis). Colorado River cunhroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki
pleuriricus). possibly Snake River cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki sp.). Mackinaw or lake
trout (Saiveiinus namaycush). longnose sucker (Catoslonws catostomus). white sucker
(Catoslomus commersoni), bluehead sucker (Calostomas discoholas). longnose dace
(Rhinichlhys ca!uraclae). monied sculpin (CallUS hairdi). Hybridized remnants of flannel mouth
sucker (Catostomus ialipinnis) may also be present (McCada :WOO. Hebein 200 I).

According to Nehring (1988), critical time periods and tlows for rainbow and brown [rout are as
follows:

Table 1 - Rainbow & Brown Trout Critical Time Periods

Species Life Stage Critical Time Period Minimum Flow
Brown Spawning.
