l') f'.. ('
....\.>'" ,,)

PART IV--PIAN OF DEVELOIMENT

The principal feature of the unit is the Narrows Dam and Reservoir
to be constructed on the South Platte River near Fort Morgan, Colo.
Also proposed is the acquisition of the existing Jackson Lake and
rehabilitation of the dam for recreation and fish and wildlife enhance-
ment. Locations of these facilities are shown on the general map,
exhibit 1. No Federal construction of irrigation distribution
facilities would be involved, since reservoir releases would be carried
by existing irrigation systems.

During feasibility investigations, other features were studied
as potential additions to the plan of development. These include the
Bijou Creek Diversion Channel to provide control of floods originating
on Bijou Creek; the Riverside, Bijou, and Sterling Pumping Plants; and
the Ovid Well Field. Descriptions of these potential additions are
presented subsequently in this part of the report.

No provisions for hydroelectric power development have been
included since the conditions which rendered this potentiality infea-
sible as determined in the 1951 Definite Plan investigations, have
not changed.

Municipal and industrial water supply has not been included as
a unit function for lack of any forseeab1e need as described
subsequently.

NARROWS DAM AND RESERVOIR

The Narrows Dam site is located in Sections 7 and 18, T. 4 IT.,
R. 58 W. and Sections 13, 23, 24, 25, and 26, T. 4 IT., R. 59 W., about
7 miles northwest of Fort Morgan. The location of the damsite with
proposed railroad and highway relocations is shown on exhibit 2.

Geology of Damsite

Types of subsurface materials of importance at the Narrows Dam
site are alluvial valley-fill sand, terrace silt, and Pierre shale
bedrOCk. The present South Platte River channel. has eroded into
the north wall of the older and much deeper channel, the thalweg of
which lies approximately 3 miles to the south. The alluvial sand
with which this ancestral channel is filled is exposed below the high-
water level in the reservoir area. Since the sand has a significant

14
