UU1872

The large amount of water withdrawn in 1965 for use by util ities was
for cool ing water purposes in connection with the generation of
electricity. Most of this water was used at a plant which did not
util ize cooling towers. Following the assumptions outlined in
Region 1, the drop from approximately \8,000 acre-feet in 1965 to
356 acre-feet in 1980 reflects the anticipated change from a flow-
through power plant to one which employs cooling towers. The
magnitude of growth in demand for electric energy prompted detailed
consideration of location for power plants. Because of the strategic
location of Region 3 with regard to power load centers and the
availability of large bodies of water in the form of reservoirs for
cool ing ponds, several new sites were included for electric
generation. This accounts for the significant increase in water
requiremenrs for utilities shown in the years 2000 and 2020.

TABLE 4-8.
