COLa "
""'Dl.unv, . ~ ,j T" II
''AT/ON ~
OAI//j

Gentlemen:

One of the legislative directives to the Kansas Water ReSources Board was
to ". . .collect and compile information pertaining to climate, water, and
soil as related to the usage of water for agricultural, industrial, and
municipal purposes." Our initial effort in preparation of the State Water
Plan indicated our planning should include more precise determination of
immediate water needs and preliminary extension of those needs at least
50 years. Joint studies with the V.S. Department of Agriculture and with
the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation provided an economic base study for the
State of Kansas. Economic projections provided in these two studies have
been converted into water requirements for 1980, 2000, and 2020.

The Water Resources Board is particularly pleased to make available to
you this report on long-range water requirements for the State of Kansas.
The report contains the results of nearly eight years of concerted staff
effort to develop an understanding of why people use water and to translate
these desires into water requirements for the State of Kansas. The Water
Resources Board intends to utilize this report as a guide in its future
water resou~ces planning efforts.

The Water Resources Board intends periodically to assess the quantity of
water being used by Kansans and compare it to the forecasts contained in
this report. Should modifications be necessary, they will be made. The
contents of this report, we hope, will be of interest to many people in
Kansas who are concerned with water problems of our state. Should you
have questions about this report, please contact the Water Resources Board.

\1

..7..erelY, 'V

/;a:tt5:M~'~

~

Keith S.
