<br />_ J ,> ~ <br />.\ 1. .) .J <br /> <br />2 METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT <br /> <br />The population of the five counties of Los Angeles, Orange, <br />Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego, based on the 1950 Fed- <br />eral census, is estimated at 5,480,000. The population of the area <br />in the five counties which can be served with Colorado River water <br />by the Metropolitan Water District is estimated at 5,400,000. an <br />increase of about 3 per cent for the year, <br /> <br />Use of Colorado Rivenvute'/' <br /> <br />Increased activity by the U.S. Army at March Field and Camp <br />Haan resulted in the delivery of 942.2 acre-feet of water during <br />the year from Lake Mathews to the army pumping station at the <br />head works, compared with 258.1 acre-feet in 1949-50. <br /> <br />Surplus water was delivered to the Orange County Water Dis- <br />trict under two contracts. Delivery was made into the channel of <br />the Santa Ana River and totaled 22,183.1 acre-feet during the <br />fiscal year. <br /> <br />Due to continued drouth conditions through the seventh succes- <br />SiVE year in the coastal area. natural Colorado River water was <br />diverted to San Diego County Water Authority at virtually the full <br />capacity of the San Diego aqueduct. A total of 73,856.1 acre-feet <br />was delivered from San Jacinto reservoir at an average rate of <br />102 cubic feet per second, about 6.6 per cent more than during <br />the previous )'ear. <br /> <br />Colorado River water, softened and filtered at the La Verne plant, <br />was delivered to all constituents in Los Angeles and Orange coun- <br />ties, except San Marino, the total of 63,493.1 acre-feet being 13 <br />per cent less than during the previous year. The average rate of <br />delivery was 87.7 cubic feet per second. <br /> <br />The following constituent areas depended upon Colorado River <br />water for a large percentage of their water supply: Santa Monica <br />93, Santa Ana 83, San Diego County Water Authority 82, Anaheim <br />73, Pasadena 62, Torrance 61, Coastal Municipal Water District 49, <br />Fullerton 48, and Long Beach 35. <br /> <br />The extent to which the District constituents used Colorado River <br />water during past years as a supplementary supply to the local <br />water yield is shown ill table 11. <br /> <br />l <br />~ <br />, <br /> <br />,l <br />
