confinns breeding success

Colorado State University laborato-
ry'scientists have ,verified what field
biologists: . had 'long: suspe~ted::
Colorado squawfish, can 'spawn' sue: '
cessfully in the, Gunnison River
upstream of Redlands Diversion Dam.
Scieritists at the university's Larval
Fish Laboratory, determined that at '
least five of some 2,000.1arval fish col"
lected from the GunnisonRiver by the
Colorado, Divisic;m'of, Wildlife were'
endarigered Colorado squaw fish,
Squawfish larvae had never before
been found upstream oL the Redlands
Diversion Dam. The discovery bodes
well for the recently completed
Redlands Fish, Ladder, which allows
the fish toswirn around the diversion'
dam to upstream spawning and feeding
areas, biologists say.
Division, biologist Rick Anderson
said less than one-tenth of I percent of
the water was sampled, indicating,
there probably" are many young
Coloradosquawfish in the Gunnison, '
Still, the key is whether they can sur' ,
vive to adulthood and reproduce. '
"In the past, the big problem for the,
fish has been the (Redlanc!s) diversion
dam," Anderson',said."Now that the,
fish ladder is complete, and we know
-Lynn ,Bjork and Diane Miller verified
that at least five of 2,000 fish larvae
collected in the Gunnison - River last
, year were Colorado squawfish. '

Colorado squawfish are reproducing in
the Gunnison, we can' be even more
optimistic that the fish can be recov-
ered through natural reproduction."
