'.

.

.

.

!

possible expansion of the study on availability and
quality of nursery habitat to include spring sampling)
also relates to this element. Sampling would be
conducted in the spring prior to runoff. Age-l Colorado
squawfish collected (perhaps only sub-sample) could be
tagged or marked (important for future assessments of
link between age-l recruitment and adult stocks; part of
Element 4). Additional sampling of same areas could be
conducted after runoff to assess downstream displacement
of age-l fish during runoff; tagging or marking of fish
prior to runoff would be useful in this effort.

ELEMENT 4 - LINK BETWEEN RECRUITMENT OF YOUNG COLORADO
SQUAWFISH AND RECRUITMENT TO ADULT STOCKS (assessment of
status of adult fish stooks). This element was intended
to provide a link between results of ELEMENTS 1-3 and
data on adult fish stocks. However, the need for and
final scope of this element depends on direction taken by
ISMP. Meetings to discuss future scope of ISMP are
scheduled. Sampling of adult fish could be conducted to
coincide with ISMP spring sampling, but would be expanded
beyond current scope of ISMP to, in part, help determine
if ISMP procedures are giving accurate indices of adult
fish stocks. Incorporated into this expanded sampling
effort would be collection of more fishery-type data
(e.g., length, weight, scales for ageing, and possibly
tagging) for better evaluation of long-term survival,
mortality, movements, growth, age structure, etc.
consideration has been given to expanding this effort to
include all fishes collected.

OTHER RECOMMENDED RESEARCH -

HYPOTHESES TESTING STUDIES (proposals for each study are
attached): Short-term studies are necessary to test specific
seasonal flow recommendation hypotheses. Proposals for
hypotheses testing studies would be submitted on an annual
basis; cooperating agencies would review proposals prior to
field and laboratory activities and assign funds to the most
pertinent studies. Results of these studies will support the
systematic Data Collection Research conducted throughout the
five-year Flaming Gorge Flow Recommendation Investigation.
