Farms are getting larger and agricultural production has been increasing.
Anot~er characteristic of the Basin is the distribution of the poPulation.
It is very slmilar to the pattern of annual rainfall, generally being
highest in the eastern part of the Basin, decreasing as it proceeds
westerly in the Basin, with a fev scattered centers of higher density
located around the principal trade centers. This Is particularly true
in the Denver area.

Before looking to the future, it appears appropriate to discuss
vhat we reean by projections, This is the utilization of past trends to
guide the determination of future conditions. This has been rolleved
for deriving the varinus economic factors in the three target years of
1980, 2000, and 2020. It varies somewhat from what economists mean
....hen they use the ....ord "forecast" in that a forecast is an attempt to
build on present conditions ...ith expected future developments, Thus,
arriving at the expected conditions in the future, Another factor ...hich
enters into the projections in the Missouri Basin is that ...ith the
assistance of the Office of Business Economics of the Department of
Commerce and the Economic Research Service of the Department of Agriculture,
national projections at the three target years ...ere made and these ...ere
allocated to the various portions of the country ....ith ~6t1mate6 of future
population, employment, and income for the Missouri Easin being a portion
of the National Projections. The Economic Work Group utilized these
overall Missouri ~sin projections and on the basis of historical trends
....ithin the Missouri Basin disaggregated these totals to the eight major
planning subregions and also broke these d~n for the planners to the
total of 35 separate areas to give the planners some further indication
or the economic situation in the projected years.
